I tried paid press release distribution. It was expensive and I really didn’t see a benefit. I found that I had much better results when I e-mailed individual journalists. I was looking for magazine editors of new product sections and gift guides. It was fairly easy to find the correct individual to contact.
I’m now looking for newspaper editors for the same. It seems to take considerably more time to ferret out the right newspaper journalist.
Can you suggest a faster method to target the best newspaper journalists for gift guides/new products for newspapers? The product is specialty bakeware (zandapanda.com).
Thanks!

Sandra, I attended a conference put on by the Community Media Workshop http://www.newstips.org/, to help nonprofits communicate to the press. Several journalists advised us to do exactly what you have done: identify specific journalists writing in your area and email them directly with your message. I agree with you that it takes time to find them. In Chicago, there is a resource guide that lists these details.

But given the turmoil in the newspaper business, the massive layoffs that are occurring very day, and with many lifestyle articles being written by freelancers, I doubt the validity of lists offline or online. It’s time-consuming, but I suggest you go newspaper websites themselves to identify people. There is no fast method that I know of.
